The history of Hotel Sport
Hotel Sport has had many names through its history (Narodni, Paternost, Javornik and Šport). It survived both world wars and will, regardless to the ups and downs, probably outlive even us…
Local prosperity, which showed itself on the outside through building exquisite buildings and the increasing regulation of the place, promoted the tendency of even greater wealth, and so locals began to think about the additional earnings. Consequently, in 1819 they opened now world-famous Postojna cave. In following years accommodation facilities had already started to open as a result of this. The first hotel, which was managed by Swiss Franz Proger from 1874, was known as the Grandhotel Adelsbergerhof. Hotel was later taken over by the Windischgraetz family. At the other end of the town of Postojna, National Hotel joined him, which was later on managed by family Paternost and also renamed it after the family name. Later it was renamed to hotel Javornik and Šport (Šport because the bowling hall was built in one part of hotel). Since 2006 totally renovated hotel operates as internationally more acceptable Sport which offers cycling and other outdoor activities instead of bowling.
The hotel was built in several stages. The first building was built in 1880. The hall was added in the years 1889 - 1906. In those times it was the only hall in Postojna in which many events took place (associations meetings, New Year and carnival parties, dramas, different conventions and elections.)
In the year of 1925 the second floor of the hall building was build. Originally it was known as the National Hotel. Later the name changed to Hotel Javornik, which was later changed to its curremt name Hotel Sport. Throughout its history the hotel has always been profitable. Situated in a central traveling location it used to accommodate 200 people at a time. More or less it was occupied by foreigners and very often from the Czech Republic, and also many celebrities and politicians have been hotel guests (Greek king Paul, Russian and Polish princes and later in the Italian era many Italian generals) who have vistited the border city of Postojna.
In the year 1992 Hotel Sport was closed and by the end of 2004 the renovation had started. In May 2005 the first part of the hotel was completely renovated into the modern and well equipped Hotel Sport. In April 2006 the other 2 parts were completed, finalising Hotel Sport as comfortable accomodation equipped with 120 beds. There is also the renowned restaurant hall which used to be the only one in Postojna years back and still has the reputation of the best balls and parties in the area.
